CleveMed Obtains Patent for Monitoring Efficacy of Sleep Apnea Treatment
Cleveland, OH - May 21, 2011 -
CleveMed, a leader in Home Sleep Testing equipment and services, announced today that they have received a newly issued patent (U.S. Patent No. 8,172,766) from the United States Patent Office for an application covering their Integrated Sleep Testing and Therapeutic Technology. The patent covers the quantitative titration and efficacy assessment of Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP), a common sleep apnea treatment. The claims cover a system and method of integrating important physiological signals from a patient monitor with CPAP parameters to generate a more comprehensive evaluation of therapy effectiveness. The patent also covers the ability of the technology to titrate the CPAP pressure remotely; thus, allowing the patients to remain at home instead of spending a night in a sleep lab. The ultimate goal of the patented technology is to maintain effective sleep apnea treatment with easy-to-use home health technologies, which will improve patient care and reduce healthcare costs.
The most common form of sleep apnea is Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA), which is a repeated interruption of normal breathing during sleep due to a collapse of the upper airways. It is estimated to impact as many people as asthma and diabetes; yet, up to 90 percent of the population with the disease remain undiagnosed and untreated. Although CPAP can be very useful, its efficacy often degrades over time due to many factors such as weight gain, mask leaks, or the emergence of comorbidities such as cardiac and pulmonary conditions. "The percentage of patients that discontinue CPAP can be as high as 50%; yet, follow-up methods to identify those patients are not part of the current standard of care. The future of sleep medicine lies in accessible and cost effective disease management which will require easy-to-use patient follow-up solutions", says Hani Kayyali, President of CleveMed.
