CLEVEMED ISSUED U.S. PATENT FOR PRESSURE SORE PREVENTION TECHNOLOGY

CLEVELAND, OHIO, August 6, 2007 - Cleveland Medical Devices Inc. (CleveMed) was awarded two U.S. patents for a sheer force sensor that will be used in the prevention of pressure sores. The first patent issued covers the material and design of the sensor, and the second covers the sensor's use in a variety of applications.

Pressure sores are areas of damaged skin and tissue that are caused by staying in one position for excessive periods of time. The sores develop when constant pressure reduces blood supply to the area, causing the cells to die. People confined to a bed or chair and unable to move are at greatest risk for developing pressure sores. If not treated properly, complications such as bone, blood, and skin infections can arise.

The new sensor is made from a thin rubber-like material that has the compliancy to conform to the body and to transduce both sheer and normal forces. It can be used to monitor the forces that occur with long term use of wheelchairs, hospital beds, prosthetics, and footwear. By monitoring the pistoning effect inside of prosthetic limbs, for example, the sensor can be used to prevent the skin breakdown that often occurs when a prosthetic sleeve does not fit the remaining limb correctly.

The sensor has many beneficial applications inside of footwear. Some key, unique capabilities of the sensor are its ability to monitor the feet of diabetics for skin ulcer prevention, observe competitive athletes during training to improve their well-being, and improve shoe companies' research and design to enhance the fit of their shoes. Main objectives for using the sensor will be to help researchers determine critical factors that cause pressure sores and then use the sensors for bio-feedback to prevent pressure sores.

According to Matt Tarler, PhD, Director of New Research and inventor of the patent, "We´re very optimistic that this technology will make it possible for clinicians and researchers alike to monitor both pressure and sheer forces and enable them to prevent skin break-down that causes approximately 200,000 new ulcers each year."
