CLEVEMED AWARDED $399,500 NIH GRANT TO CONTINUE DEVELOPMENT OF A WIRELESS MINIATURE SLEEP DEVICE FOR MICE

CLEVELAND, OHIO, January 11, 2007 - Cleveland Medical Devices Inc. (CleveMed) has been awarded a $399,500 two-year, Phase I grant from the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to continue the commercial development of their MousePaak technology for wireless monitoring of brain activity (EEG) and muscle activity (EMG) in mice during sleep.

An estimated 40 million individuals in the United States experience sleep-related disorders such as sleep apnea, narcolepsy and insomnia. CleveMed´s new technology will allow for more accurate testing and research to be done to create and perfect treatments for these disorders.

Edward Rapp, principal investigator for the grant, said that, “Current technology in sleep research with mice requires that the mice be tethered to their cages, thereby limiting their natural activity. The MousePaak will represent an important advancement, as it will allow for a device that is both smaller than current technology and wireless."

Recent studies have shown that tethered monitoring of mice can be ineffective, since it does not allow for the natural movement and activity necessary in this type of research. Through MousePaak, CleveMed will improve on existing systems by integrating wireless technology, allowing the mice to move about naturally, while still monitoring EEG and EMG signals. With new automated software, the MousePaak also will provide sleep-staging information, data that is important to the sleep study process.

According to Pingfu Feng, PhD, Director of Research for the Center for Sleep Disorders Research at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, "This new device and analysis software will revolutionize the pre-clinical testing of pharmaceutical treatments for sleep-related problems and disorders. It will also be a tool for revealing mechanisms for older therapy and testing of novel compounds or theories for treatment with translational meaning for human insomnia."
