INGENUITY COMBINES NORTHEAST OHIO STRING QUARTET WITH THE REGION'S BIOTECH

The Ingenuity Festival of Art & Technology will bring together the ingenious forces of the Cavani String Quartet, the Cleveland Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) Center, and CleveMed in a collaborative session on November 1st at 12:45 pm on the 6th floor of MetroHealth Medical Center's Hamann Building, room 601. This session is designed to allow the regional artist and regional technologist to experiment with combining art and technology for an Ingenuity 2007 exhibit. The Ingenuity Festival will celebrate Northeast Ohio's global output of innovation and creativity from July 19-22 throughout Playhouse Square.

The FES Center, which studies uninhibited motion for use in the rehabilitation of paralyzed individuals, will collaborate with CleveMed, which has developed several wireless physiological data acquisition systems. Together, they will study a Cavani violin player's motion and record the data to create visualizations of the muscles used.

Ingenuity fills an important role as a growing regional and extra-regional platform on which to celebrate the results of our region's wealth of brainpower and its capacity to produce world-class art and ideas. It is not coincidence that so much innovation flows from our corner of the world. Northeast Ohio's strong culture and history have produced innovators who share an ingenious creativity. This same quality is found at the intersection between artistic and technological innovation.

The Ingenuity Festival of Art & Technology is an annual event in which the best of Northeast Ohio's art and technology is showcased in a four-day summer festival in the heart of downtown Cleveland. The event brings virtually all of the area's major arts and cultural organizations, as well as individual artists and performers, together with technology firms and innovators to demonstrate the region's impressive resources and to encourage its growth.

The Cleveland FES Center is a research consortium including: Cleveland VA Medical Center, MetroHealth Medical Center and Case Western Reserve University. The FES Center provides innovative options for restoring neurological health and function by developing advanced technologies and integrating them into clinical care. Our focus is to improve people's lives by supporting fundamental research in the neuro-muscular sciences, developing new technologies and methods, performing clinical evaluation and feasibility testing, and promoting the wide-spread deployment of new technologies through professional education and commercial partnerships.

The Cavani String Quartet, winner of the prestigious Naumburg Chamber Music Award, has been described by The Washington Post as "completely engrossing, powerful and elegant." An irresistible presence on stage, the Quartet concertizes regularly in major series and festivals throughout North America and Europe. Appearances include Carnegie Hall and Alice Tully Hall in New York, the Corcoran Gallery of Art and Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., the Ambassador Series in Los Angeles, Muziekcentrum De Ijsbreker in Amsterdam and Festival de L'Épau in France. Active proponents of contemporary music, the Quartet has commissioned and performed a world-wide array of living composers and is a recipient of the CMA/ASCAP Award for Adventurous Programming. The Quartet has been featured on National Public Radio's Performance Today and St. Paul Sunday, NBC, CBS, ABC and PBS television. In 2005, the Quartet became the first recipient of the Guarneri String Quartet Residency Award from Chamber Music America. Cavani Quartet recordings of Bartók, Ravel, Dvorák, Schumann, Brahms, Welcher, Erb, Chausson, Brouwer and Primosch are available on the Azica, Gasparo, New World, Albany, and Pantheon labels. Formed in 1984, the Cavani Quartet was appointed Quartet-in-Residence at the Cleveland Institute of Music in 1988.
