WEWS-TV Channel 5 news personality, Linda Passariello, undergoing continuous brain monitoring, reported how the lack of sleep dangerously affects a person's ability to drive. Without sleep for 36 straight hours, the Cleveland reporter performed normal activities and took several alertness and simulated driving tests using a portable wireless sleep monitor, the Crystal Monitor 16-S. The device, developed by Cleveland Medical Devices Inc. (CleveMed), was used with newly developed brain monitoring software designed to pinpoint her states of alertness.

The brain monitoring software, developed by spin-off company CleveMed NeuroWave Inc., quickly gave a snap shot of Linda's level of alertness and sleepiness by creating an environment that challenged her ability to stay alert. Portable and not much bigger than a deck of cards, the Crystal Monitor 16-S wireless patient unit remotely sent Linda's brain waves to a computer. The brain monitoring software then, in real-time, measured and analyzed her brain waves, as well as the accuracy and speed of her response to computer-generated events, to see how well she actually was able to stay awake and alert. While the NeuroWave software product is undergoing further development, currently, the Crystal Monitor 16-S is used by sleep centers as a convenient alternative for sleep apnea diagnosis.

At the end of 36 hours without sleep, researchers at CleveMed NeuroWave and Southwest Sleep Center concluded that Linda fell asleep 28 times for 10 seconds or more. Southwest Sleep Center's Dr. Mansoor Ahmed, M.D. describes this type of sleep as microsleeps where the eyes and brain activity both calm down impairing a driver for 10 to 20 seconds. Near the end of Linda's grueling 36 hours, after an actual driving test, the Ohio Highway Patrol's compared the reporter's driving ability to an individual after four alcoholic beverages.

Researchers agree that driving while drowsy can be equivalent to driving under the influence of alcohol. "Person's look [is] tired, mood is irritable [and] it [sleepiness] affects the memory. For all practical purposes, it affects your vigilance, the driving ability [and] it also impairs the field of vision" says Southwest Sleep Center's Dr. Mansoor Ahmed, M.D. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, drowsy driving accounts for an estimated 1,550 deaths, 71,000 injuries and $12.5 billion in loses every year.

As a prevention, the Crystal Monitor 16-S and NeuroWave brain monitoring software could be used by police to catch people who may be driving while dangerously drowsy. Dr. Mo Modarres, Ph.D., President of CleveMed NeuroWave, explains the significance of Linda's investigation. "Sleepiness is a problem that needs to be addressed. A lot of crashes are sleep related even though, because of the lack of a means of measuring sleepiness, it hasn't been addressed as much as it should.
