CLEVELAND MEDICAL DEVICES RECEIVES U.S. PATENT FOR PRESSURE SORE PREVENTION TECHNOLOGY
Cleveland, Ohio, February 22, 2001 -
Cleveland Medical Devices Inc. (CleveMed), one of Ohio's fastest growing technology companies, announced that a US patent has been issued for its Pressure Sore Prevention Technology.
"We're delighted that we have received our US Patent for our Pressure Relief Reminder and Compliance System" stated Robert N. Schmidt, President of Cleveland Medical Devices. The biomedical venture that manufactures wireless medical monitors and rehabilitation devices was named the 2nd fastest growing business in Cleveland Ohio by Inc. magazine this year.
"The device comes in two different options. The Pressore (R) Reminder is a deck of cards size device that fits on the back of a wheelchair. It provides a tone or vibration to the wheelchair user to remind them to perform a pressure relief, allowing blood to flow to skin cells that otherwise might break down after sitting in a chair for even modest periods of time. The Pressore Alert takes the Pressore Reminder to the next level by adding memory to the device. This allows seating professionals to view a history of the pressure relief maneuvers, allowing physicians to counsel their patients," added Schmidt. "This is particularly important for paraplegics who use their wheelchairs for more than a short time every day. Many people develop pressure sores while sitting all day at work. Ulcers require medical attention resulting in missing long periods of work, possible loss of jobs, amputation, or even death."
Major
clinical studies are currently being performed at two major medical facilities in Cleveland and Pittsburgh. The devices have been developed with funding from the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development at the National Institutes of Health. The devices are being introduced today at the International Seating Symposium in Orlando, FL.
